The first time I seriously thought of the word “milestones” was 10 years ago during my antenatal clinic. My paediatrician was explaining the key developmental changes happening to our little mister crawling, standing, tantrums, the feeding drill ” open your mouth, chew, swallow”. Years later I learnt to give a face that scares a scarecrow and I got the feeding drill done without uttering a word. We are all grown. We eat the food voluntarily.
Milestones are important they are the sign posts that we need towards greater goals. Growth. A race. Achievement. This weekend is a key milestone. All, rather most of my training mates by the time I post this will have done and dusted their last long run towards the Berlin marathon race happening on 29 September 2019. It has taken dedication for these heroes and sheroes to train for an average of 3 to 4 months and an average of 60 kms – 111kms per week ( dare me for the data on this). Waking up early a.m when the average kenyan is turning amidst the last sweet dream. They have missed the sweet dreams but the end is in sight.
A long run is a milestone. The last long run is done. It’s given each of us the confidence or otherwise we need to get to the finish line. It reminds us that what we started for sure we must finish. We must go on, whether progress is slow or fast. We must move ahead. Some of us learn to talk early some of us take time for voice boxes to open up. When they do we are chatter boxes with volume control.
I attended the 2019 Kenya colour run with my big and small misters. Our pace setter for the run was our smallest mister. He would shout ” Time to run, gooo” then shortly ” okay guys walk now…” the bigger one would try run ahead after this command and little mister would shout ” I said stop..come on “. My best moment: “guys ‘ the finish line, let’s gooooo” woow to see this little mister so powered for the finish gave me such mojo. He realises that the sight of finish lines are a sign of victory, a sign that we have gone through the milestones and now we have to kick our best kick. Our best, because the best rocks! The best is a first timer…that is why it’s the best you have ever had. The best you have ever pushed to….makes you see the world from the galaxy! You get reborn when you give and get the best.
It’s been real. We go “Taper” . Our dream paces are valid! We have ticked the boxes for all milestones. We must finish what we started.
