An Early, dark ,dewy morning. I race up on my newest wheel – a cute black and pink sole. A tough hill in Ololosukan awaits my heed. An Alpha hill. Tall. Towering. Elevating. Long. Strangely Windy and Humid at the peak. Stony rough on the walls. A thrill to sight and well …to feel if you can. The kind that laughs at you. The kind that shuts you up. The kind that lights fire and numbs everything below your waist. The winding hill. The kind that is intimidating. You take a corner, think it’s done, it keeps rising. The kind that stoops your back. And at its peak of wrath forces you to bow down. Officially my Alpha hill.
A dragged bounce after another I tackle, breathing, sweating, cursing and harassed.
I hear a pair of footsteps. Oh Jesus, thanks for the rescue. Must be the donkey that carried you to Jerusalem. It’s still the kindest animal on earth, surprisingly more intelligent than a horse. My nostrils and my mouth cant coordinate. Nostrils win and I raise my hand to acknowledge am fine. I cant talk. Am mid the climb, to my right a beautiful view of nature. Ahead some springy pair of legs bounce off.
A sign of hope, the hill top is in view. A luminous hill top! Hurrray!! I look up a swarm of energetic excited runners! fresh, geared up, unstoppable. These ones you need a spiky boom barrier the kind they have at the Kamiti prison facility to stop but they may just jump over! Sweaty hugs, high fives and flashes of selfies..I catch up in time for the niceties! The welcome relief. The “energy” shared. The vibrancy we share knowing too well what we’ve been through and what’s ahead. The carnival. The smiles. Am tempted to end the run here….finish line carnival. Our reunion is cut short our friends are on 3km of 50km. My sweat dries up instantly at the mention of 50km. Am inspired. Am embarrassed. I pinch my numb glute for my naughty thought to snatch a banana or was it a sweet potato I saw from his back pack. He needs it at the 43rd km. I have only 3kms to go.
Push your limit and when its gets tough, pause, get a selfie flash see how far you’ve come. See the beautiful people and world around you. Climb your hill. Keep climbing don’t stop. Notice the beauty of nature, of life as you climb. There is some kick at reaching the top. Everything lights up. The view is in full swing not just on your right. Satan knew the magnificent views from the hill tops. He took Jesus at the top of the hill. Shock on him. The Master had His grip on. Get your grip. A day at a time take the climb. The temptation to cruise back downhill is real but don’t. The greatest glory is in mastering the climb. Getting your grip. It takes time. Patience. Consistency. Seven times over Satan tested Jesus.
I shall keep at it. Until am the master of the hill. All the hills. The hills in Kajiado. The hills in life. The donkey carried the Son of man to Jerusalem. Only this special man was carried not you! So up you go! Long for the man Jesus not His donkey!
And oh fact: A donkey will never get involved in an activity if it considers it to be unsafe.
