“….This season must not leave us the same….” a text from one of my running mates. She reminds me of some running performance data, an emoji here and there, how far we have come. I look at our two sons, the youngest busy feeding his dog, after glooming him and his older sibling blending some oats flour and grated carrots, “no sugar mum”, healthy cake, some honey please. “We should open a gym after this is done” I comment and my Mister gives me an eye to watch what I say next. Every week I see a new dumbbell and fitness equipment in the house. Next week I bet he will need a 100kg weight. He could just lift me and the kids right? I watch my mouth, I need a new running pair next month, the kahara ngong mileage has ripped my soles. This season is unprecedented. No one has lived this before, no experience, no history well afew pandemics in the past but not to this extent. The generations today never lived through them. The education system, well kids now more savvy but a thought for the kids without the luxury of zoom classes and edomondo.com.
At work, WFH ( Work From Home) the new normal. Large companies run virtually and still deliver to the market! I love it.
The prospect of working for NASA (childhood dream) from my village in Embu may just be a possibility.
The other side of life has brought tough realities of lost lives, a human society that is forced to sacrifice the warmth of physical connection, threatened livelihoods, and strained nations. This season shall not leave us the same, we must look around and make hay. Yes the sun doesnt shine but we have to find new ways to make hay. Waiting to make hay when the sun shines maybe a long wait. The pandemic is becoming part of us without an end date. Accountant friends love end dates. Month end. Quarter end. Year end. Corona end.
Am at the peak of inspiration. My team mates breaking records every day. We are reaching out to the needy around us. Adopting needy families. My genes arising from hibernation and sparking me to great beeps. That early morning fast run in ngong I was high on something. Maybe my mask emits some dope. What if am just dreaming. I see young chefs who tell me they want a YouTube channel. Little people who are more responsible and street smart. I see WFH making us more human and still connected. A blend of family and work – isnt this some work life harmony (mmmh balance is debatable) and a bigger focus to productivity rather than presence. A special connection when a colleague logs on with a crying baby , the rattle of pots and pans or sound of a DIY repair work in the background. The season is unprecedented. Be unprecedented too. Push your limits, test your capability even in times of adversity. Awaken your genes. Awaken your creativity. Awaken the possibilities in you and the people around you. Give hope and shine light wherever you are. Because if the sun doesn’t shine, you still can make hay. Its unprecedented.
